Atlantic Co. schedules flu shots in Oct., Nov.
From staff reports • September 23, 2008

The Atlantic County Division of Public Health will offer public flu clinics from Oct. 4 through Nov. 18. About 6,000 doses of vaccine will be evenly distributed at 11 clinics.

"We are offering our flu shot clinics earlier in the season this year to provide eligible individuals with vaccinations prior to the height of the flu season that typically peaks in January," County Executive Dennis Levinson said. "While the timing and duration of flu seasons may vary, we encourage residents to get vaccinated early to help aid in preventing the spread of the contagious virus."

The flu can cause mild to severe illness and even death. Symptoms include fever, headaches, extreme fatigue, chest discomfort and cough, muscle aches and pains. It is most prevalent between November and May but can occur at any time. The flu is responsible for an average of 36,000 deaths each year and as many as 200,000 annual hospitalizations.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, complications of the flu can include bacterial pneumonia; ear infections; sinus infections; dehydration; and worsening of chronic medical conditions, such as congestive heart failure, asthma or diabetes.

Atlantic County residents ages 18 or older are eligible to receive a flu shot at any of the county's 11 public clinics for a $15 fee. Pneumonia shots are also available to eligible residents 65 and older for a $25 fee. There are no out-of-pocket costs for either shot for Medicare Part B recipients who present their Medicare card.

Health officials recommend people at high risk of having serious flu complications, and those who live with or care for them, should be vaccinated. High-risk populations include individuals age 50 and older; people with chronic heart or lung conditions, asthma, diabetes, kidney disease or a weakened immune system; women who will be pregnant during the influenza season; health care workers; and household contacts and out-of-home caregivers to children younger than 5.

Residents also are encouraged to practice universal respiratory precautions, which include frequent hand washing, covering the nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing, using tissues to contain respiratory secretions, and promptly disposing of them.

The clinic schedule includes:

10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 4, Atlantic Cape Community College, gymnasium, 5100 Black Horse Pike, Mays Landing.

10 a.m. to noon Oct. 15, Our Lady of Sorrows Church Hall, Wabash Avenue, Linwood.

9:30 to 11 a.m. Oct. 17, Louise Basile Memorial Center, Buena Nutrition Site, Central Avenue, Minotola.

Saturday, October 11, Cub Scout Pack 275 will be selling their famous Trails End Popcorn at the Ventnor Avenue Wawa, and the Dorset Avenue Wawa. Popcorn tins start at $9. There are a wide variety of sizes, flavors (and prices). For $25, you can send popcorn to our troops. Last year, scouts, with your help, sent 77,000 tins of popcorn to our brave men and women in the armed forces.
This is Ventnor Pack 275's only fundraiser. It pays for all their activities, including the camping trips! Please support our kids.
Thank-you

Forget the Christmas list; the fun at holiday bazaars is seeing what's there
Published: Wednesday, November 19, 2008

One way to get into the spirit of the season to is shop at one of the many holiday bazaars hosted by area churches, synagogues, volunteers fire companies and other civic organizations.

These mini shopping sprees offer handcrafted gifts, decorations and ornaments not found at the mall.

Add to that the refreshments that are usually available and the opportunity to catch up with old friends, and you have a recipe for an enjoyable afternoon.
Click the article link to check up on the lengthy list of crafts fairs and holiday bazaars.
