Lightbulb SEWAGE PIPE: Consolidated Information

Pipe repair has Ventnor urging limits on water use
Published: Monday, August 04, 2008
From Press staff reports

VENTNOR - Residents of the Ventnor Heights section are being asked to minimize their water usage today and Tuesday - and possibly beyond - as a sewer-flow problem is fixed, said Stephen Weintrob, commissioner of Public Works.

Sometime last week, a hole emerged in a pipe off West End Avenue, Weintrob said. The pump in the nearby pumping station was shut off this weekend as the source of the sluggish flow was investigated; it was restarted Sunday afternoon.

A contractor will begin work on the system today. The pipe is sending some sewage into the station but leaking into the bay, too - "so far, not at any levels that are dangerous," Weintrob said.

Weintrob estimated 1,500 homes are affected. Pipes in that area are about 50 to 60 years old, he said.

Exclamation Hope Ventnor's Not Going Down the Tubes

About three weeks ago a hole opened up in a water pipe under Oxford Ave. between Ventnor and Atlantic Aves.

All that discussion about rotting infrastructure during the election campaign was not poppycock.

This is just more evidence of the Kreischer administration's credit card mentality and doing everything for show. With these unpleasant surprises (don't forget the sad state of the City's finances) it's hard to be magnanimous in victory.

There ought to be a law that deals with such miscreants.

Default Stuff Happens Sometimes

I thought this pipe was relined several years ago, somewhere around 5 years. I remember above ground pipes on Wellington Ave by the mile stretch. This will most likely happen at other locations in town as the water, sewer and storm drain pipes have been neglected for years.

The shame of it all is the effort to prevent water pollution from dredge spoils was successful, but now there's raw sewerage going into the same body of water. Hopefully the emergency pipe and pump holds up.

Commissioner Weintrob was interviewed on channel 40, he seems like a hands on person and seemed to be on top of things.

UNDERWATER SEWAGE LEAK CAUSES BIG MESS
Phaedra Laird ( plaird@nbc40.net ) - 8/4/08 05:29 pm

VENTNOR--An underwater sewage leak in Ventnor has officials scrambling to fix the problem. Residents living nearby say they know these kinds of things sometimes happen, they just want it taken care of.

"Something floating on top of the water and I look at it and say, that's no good." Luis Preira knew something was wrong this weekend when he saw what looked like raw sewage floating by his Ventnor Heights home. "Smelled bad, especially by the dock, it smells really bad."

Little did Preira know at the time, these issues were due to a leaking underwater sewer line just yards from his home. "There's a breach in the pipe that goes over to the sewer main," said Commissioner Stephen Weintrob who oversees the Public Works Department for Ventnor, "it's very significant."

Officials say they noticed the 2-3 foot hole in the underwater line on Friday, since then an emergency pump has been used to reduce the amount of sewage that's entering the water. "Now that the pump is working, it's pulling through most of it, most all of it," said Weintrob, "that's why it's not dangerous. If the pump went down, that's a different story."

Today local, county and state officials gathered to examine the problem, which they hope to have fixed by this weekend. Officials say they have to wait for an extremely low tide to put in the new pipe, and during that time, the intercoastal waterway will have to be closed to boaters.

"I'm not happy about it, but I'm sure it wouldn't be the first time something like that's happened," said waterfront resident, Renee Alford, "It doesn't absolutely disgust me, I haven't seen anything or noticed a difference. It's not great, but obviously they're going to take care of it. It would be nice if they could keep any of us along here on top of what's happening."

While officials work to fix the problem, they tell residents to use common sense...don't swim in the area and cut down on your water usage.

Ventnor sewage pipe hole is getting bigger officials tell residents
By LYNDA COHEN Staff Writer, 609-272-7257

Published: Sunday, August 10, 2008

VENTNOR - A hole in a canal sewage pipe has gotten larger, causing officials to warn people not to crab, fish or swim in the area.
"We're doing everything we can," said Stephen Weintrob, commissioner of Public Works. "Because it's a weekend and the town is packed, it's causing us more of a problem than we expected."

The hole was discovered about a week ago, he said. Public Works received a call early Saturday morning during low tide reporting that there were signs it was getting worse.

Residents and visitors are being asked not to swim, crab or fish in the area along Harvard and Fulton avenues.

"We're also recommending that people use good responsible common sense in washing clothes, using dish washers, things like that," Weintrob said. "The more pressure put on the (water) system, the more problem there is in getting it through."

He said all the city's emergency services are being used in the city.
"We're just hoping to get the residents to cooperate with and help us along a little bit," he said.

Several e-mails to WLV advise that the city's reverse 911 system was apparently activated, as the people sending e-mail reported they got a recorded message telling them to avoid activities in that area.

Marine police with bullhorns might have been useful in the immediate area itself. The pipe in question is reported to be 8 feet below the mudline; it might make evaluation of the pipe's rupture size difficult. News reports from NBC-40 evening news video shows that large red warning signs were posted.

Service quickly restored after work crew accidently cuts Ventnor gas line
By MARTIN DeANGELIS, Staff Writer 609-272-7237
Published: Tuesday, August 12, 2008

VENTNOR – A public-works crew accidentally cut a gas line late Tuesday morning near the city’s public school, but workers from South Jersey Gas had fixed the problem and restored gas service to all customers by shortly after noon, Ventnor’s fire chief said.

The 2-inch pipe was on Lafayette Avenue near the Ventnor Educational Community Complex, but no students were at the school Tuesday, according to Chief Bert Sabo. A “good breeze” was dispersing the gas and even though city officials got numerous reports from people smelling gas, South Jersey Gas officials told the chief that the leak didn’t create any danger for the public.

The fire department was dispatched to the leak at 11:08 a.m. and the wind “was moving a lot of fumes” after the pipe was cut, Sabo said. The problem was fixed a bit more than an hour later, he added.

SEWAGE LEAK REPAIRED IN VENTNOR
Marshall Northington ( news@nbc40.net ) - 8/14/08 06:35 pm
Last Updated - 8/14/08 07:00 pm

VENTNOR-A temporary fix, has taken care of a smelly problem in Ventnor.

Late Wednesday, public works crews were able to bypass a broken underwater sewage pipe, that runs across the west canal, near Harvard and Fulton Avenue.

For almost two weeks, the broken pipe had spilled raw sewage into the canal, prompting a ban on swimming, crabbing and fishing in the area.

"...from what I understand, this is a temporary solution, the previous pipe was underground, this pipe of course is underwater, its laying on the canal floor."

There's no word on when work will begin on a permanent repair.

Channel 10 news reported on a family who lives near the pipeline.

Raw Sewage In Water Ruins Beachgoers' Plans
POSTED: 7:09 pm EDT August 14, 2008

VENTNOR, N.J. -- For Juan Forero and his family, summer at their waterfront home in Ventnor is wasting away.

CLICK FOR TED GREENBERG VIDEO REPORT

An underwater pipe is leaking, filling the back bay canal along Harvard Avenue with raw human waste.

"That's all poop that came from the sewer pipe," Forero said, pointing to floating waste. "It smells really bad."

The sewage started surfacing nearly two weeks ago and now signs warn people not to swim, crab or fish in the area.

"We'd go on the jet ski, jump in the water, but we can't do any of that now," Forero said. "It's all dirty."

City officials initially thought the problem was coming from a pumping station on the other side of the canal, but it turned out to be a large hole in the more than 50-year-old pipe.

Raw sewage continued to leak out until Wednesday.

"The public works department did, worked as quick and as intelligently as they could work," said Stephen Weintrob, Ventnor city commissioner.

Temporary pumping equipment is being used until city leaders find a permanent solution. They said they would wait for the changing tides to flush out the sewage already in the water.

"It's not pretty," said Renee Alfred, of Ventnor. "You're not going to want to be outside in this."

Forero hopes he can get back in the water before summer ends.

"This house is made for the water," he said. "This is to enjoy and now you can't enjoy anything."
DB Current provides a very detailed report about the repairs.

Your post prompted a drive-by for photo-taking. Others who view the gear might be better qualified to state what it does. This online press release suggests who manufactures it.
