Ventnor restaurants must leave 7 feet between outside tables, curb

VENTNOR - The town's popular restaurants should be easier to walk by next summer, thanks to a new law ordering the owners to keep 7 feet of clear sidewalk between their outside tables and the curb.

The ordinance generated some opposition when the City Commission introduced it last month, but nobody spoke at all - for the idea or against it - at a public hearing the commissioners held Thursday before before voting to make it local law.

Mayor Theresa Kelly was the lead supporter of the plan to tighten the table rules, calling it a safety issue. She said some restaurants let their sidewalks get so crowded with people and furniture in the summer just past, pedestrians trying to use the sidewalk had to risk walking out into the streets to get around the bottlenecks.

The owner of the Red Room Cafe, which opened on Dorset Avenue earlier this year, protested the 7-foot rule at last month's meeting. But a few other restaurant owners also defended the concept at that first meeting.

The new law will definitely lead to fewer tables being out on the city's sidewalks next summer, if only because it limits owners to putting seating in front of their buildings. The Red Room, which has a corner location, also had tables on its side street during the busy warm-weather season.
